Change is inevitable in life. Everything changes – styles, moves, seasons, people. People switch on you in a minute, but not God. God is immutable. He does not change. He is the same yesterday, today, and always. His nature, purpose, promises, perfection, and word do not change. God is identical. He is the pre-existent one, the immutable one.
The supporting scripture, Hebrews 13:8, says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Numbers 23:19 also tells us that “God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?”
When nothing else could help, love lifted us. Our love for God may get cold, hot, or lukewarm, but God’s love for us never changes. God did not stop loving us even when we sinned and continued to sin, even when they crucified him. He kept on loving us. His love did not change.
God’s purpose did not change when it came down to the church and mankind. He did not come down from the cross. He accepted his assignment from his Father and stuck to it. He humbled himself and did what was necessary to carry it out. He became obedient to death. His love did not change.
The book of Malachi tells us about a group of people who knew how to worship God at one time. They loved him at one time, but they became disobedient. They strayed away from the ways of God, just like some of us do. We stray away from the teachings of God, His commandments, and the things He wants us to do. This group of people failed God time and time again. Even the priesthood down to the people had forgotten God.
But God did not change. He is the same yesterday, today, and forevermore. He did it before, and He will do it again. He will fulfill His promises. He will act. He will not change His mind. He will not stop loving us. He will not fail us.
So let us trust in God’s unchanging nature. Let us hold on to His promises. Let us believe that He will do it again. For He’s done it before, and He will do it again. Amen.
